Last night's segment on religion versus god made me remember a similar piece I'd written recently but had not yet posted, so I think I'll post it here first.

Passing Thoughts: Strange Beliefs
By Jesse Shearer
Sometimes, I look at some of the things I do and realize that when others say that those things seem strange, weird, gross, or a combination thereof, I must admit that those people are at least a little bit right.
Take, for example, my habit of cramming various paper containers, be they fast food cups, raisin containers, or whatnot, full of used dryer sheets, old tea bags, and other debris of daily living. I'll admit, that's strange, weird, a little gross, and maybe not even very good for me. But it does have a little something to do with what passes as spirituality for me.
See, the way I look at the world from that perspective, yeah, there is one big main deity, but it's all busy trying to redefine its place in the world after the use of atomic weaponry at the end of World War Two and all that we've been doing in space since then.
While all that's going on, the day-to-day operations of the world as we know it have been left to a rather large population of spirits, demons, dragons, and other mythical beasts, creatures, and people . They all happen to like many of the same things we do, so I figure that letting them have a bit of ours, by way of burning the items, or representations thereof, that they'll get a share, be happy, and return the favor.
Sometimes, the various unseens even do requests. I've even found them to be rather generous, especially since some of the things I ask for tend to be out there, at least from a human perspective.
After all, I have this odd way of asking for things like a foot of snow in late March. Or rain for three hours at an inch and a half an hour. Anything that can slow a city the size of the one I live in down without really doing horrific amounts of damage. Just enough to give us mere mortals time to think; figure out what we really want or don't want in life.
Then again, maybe that's not as strange as I think...
